Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences

Access requisites.

Two requirements (1. Curriculum requisites and 2. Academic preparation) must be satisfied to be admitted to the Civil Engineering International Master course.

Applicants with an Italian first-level (Bachelor) degree:

1. Curriculum requisites

At least ONE of the following curriculum requisites (A. or B.) must be satisfied (SSD=scientific area):

2. Adequacy of the academic preparation

In order to verify the adequacy oftheacademic preparation, an evaluation will be held by an AdmissionBoardappointed by the Board of the Degree Programme (Consiglio di Corso di studio).

The Admission Board willevaluate the candidate'sacademic merit, with reference to the final graduationgrade, which will be considerate adequate if equal to 92/100 or higher.

For studentswith a final graduation grade lowerthan 92/100, the Board will examine the academic merit through the exam ofthefollowing elements:

- Exams scores;

- Duration of the studiesincomparison with the legal duration on the Bachelor's Degree.

Together with the evaluation of the adequacy of the academic preparation,a verification of the English language skills(language requisites) willbeheld.

Students need to demonstrate an Englishlanguage skillB2or higher, by presenting avalid Certificate issued by one of the following institutions:

· University ofBologna Language Centre (CLA-UNIBO), or other Italian Universities Language Centre.

· Internationally recognizedlanguage certifications,suchas TOEFL, IELTS, etc. (minimum scores to beconsidered equivalent to B2 levelbeing the following: IELTS 5,5; TOEFL PBT 507-557; TOEFL CBT 180-217; TOEFL IBT 80-99; Cambridge First Certificate (FCE); Trinity College of London ISE II,

· Entitled Englishschools.

If no Certification is presented fortheevaluation an individual evaluation is carried out by the Admission Board through an interview or test with a specifically appointedAssessment Board.

Applicants with a foreign University Bachelor degree:

The fulfillment of the curriculum requirements and the adequacy of the academic preparation is evaluated case-by-case by the Board of the Degree Programme (―Consiglio di Corso di Laurea‖). If a credit/grade conversion (for both course contents and hours) to the Italian system is possible, the requirements listed above are checked.

For all the students (with Italian or Foreign University Bachelor degree), if one of the above requirements (Curriculum requisites and Academic preparation) is not fulfilled, the Board of the Degree Programme can decide to admit the student on the basis of his whole career.

The degree programme can provide a session for international students and appoint a commission to assess the students' personal competencies and skills, consistent with the competition notice awarding scholarships (scolarships deadline is usually scheduled in May).

Programme profile

The 2ndcycle degree programme aims to produce specialist, professional figures fortechnical and organisational roles in working contexts demanding knowledge ofmethodological and operative aspects of basic sciences and engineering,privileging the specific aspects of civil engineering but without neglectingother more general areas.
The degreeprogramme aims to produce highly qualified professionals in great demand bothlocally and nationally. These outcomes are achieved through a teachingprogramme based on a solid background in physics and mathematics, completed inthis 2nd cycle degree programme by some specific course units, theacquisition of professional and practical skills in all specific disciplines ofCivil Engineering, and in particular the design, execution, management and monitoringof civil building works, hydraulic works, infrastructures, transport systems,geotechnical works, territorial projects and surveying in territorial and urbanareas.
The selectedcore learning activities aim to provide skills in the analysis of advancedmethodological and operational procedures applied to civil engineeringsciences:
- specialisttraining in structural engineering, the instruments and methodologies of whichare particularly applied to the analysis of the design, conservation and recoveryof works, as well as safety;
- specialistcompetences in the field of hydraulic infrastructure engineering;
-interdisciplinary learning in the design of off-shore structures for energyproduction and mining. The curriculum provides ampleroom for autonomous learning activities, including exercises and laboratorywork allowing students to develop strong skills in the design, execution,management and monitoring of even highly complex works. The programme isdelivered entirely in the English language, targeting foreign students andItalian students wishing to study in an international context. The programmealso includes the possibility to spend a period of study abroad.

Design, fromthe basic idea to the definition of construction details, of even complexstructures (buildings, roofing, bridges, tanks, etc.); modelling usingcalculations, load analyses, stress calculations, design and checking ofstructural elements, graphic drawings, complete with construction details andcalculation reports. HYDRAULIC ENGINEER FORTERRITORIAL MANAGEMENT

FUNCTION INA PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT:
Withreference to even highly complex hydraulic infrastructures (hydrographicalbasins and complexes, mains water networks, sewage systems and drainage land,water lifting and hydroelectric systems, torrents, rivers, estuaries, beachesand ports):

1)functional analyses,
2) design ofinterventions, from the initial idea to the design of construction details,
3) controlof correct execution,

4) responsemonitoring.

Selection ofappropriate stress conditions (precipitation, discharge, waves), modelling ofinfrastructural behaviour using appropriate physical or numeric models, designand verification of structural elements and systems, production of graphicreports complete with construction details and reports to accompany thedesigns. Even complex experimental testing on physical models or prototypemeasurements and critical interpretation of the results.

COMPETENCIESASSOCIATED TO THE FUNCTION:

The above functions require specialist civilengineering skills as well as additional specialisation and knowledge of thedesign and management of hydraulic works and systems and soil protectioninterventions, applying updated and innovative methods selected autonomouslyand responsibly.

i)application of the principles and theory of hydraulics to problems linked towater motion in both natural and artificial systems;

Design,execution and supervision of complex surveying activities, using the mostmodern Geomatics techniques for the purposes of surveying, monitoring andrepresenting structures and the territory. Identification of the mostappropriate operative methods for the specific applications in the engineeringfield using topography, digital photogrammetry and image analysis, spatialgeodesics (Global Navigation Satellite Systems - GNSS), aerial and ground-basedlaser scanning, aerial or satellite multispectral remote sensing. All servicesrelated to the new Galileo satellite navigation system. Execution, testing andmanagement of topographic databases, Territorial Information Systems and GIS,numeric cartography, cadastral systems. Control and testing during the executionand management of works and infrastructures, know how to implement specialistsurveys with high precision in order to monitor structures. Ability to carryout highly complex experiments and critically analyse the results.

Withreference to the execution of all civil engineering works, identification and analysis of geotechnical problems usingappropriate characterisation of soils, processing and implementation ofsuitable geotechnical models to study soil response and its interaction withstructures. Identification of appropriate design solutions and calculations andrelative, possibly innovative, intervention methods with particular attentionto issues concerning execution. Design of even advanced geotechnical surveying programmes,assuring the correct execution, critically interpreting data and establishingrelevant parameters.

COMPETENCIESASSOCIATED TO THE FUNCTION:

Specificknowledge of earth mechanics and the development of earth material forecastingmodels and works built in the ground, building foundations, support works,underground works, tunnels, reclamations. COASTAL AND OFF-SHORECONSTRUCTION ENGINEER

FUNCTION INA PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT:

Assessmentof the environmental project conditions (waves, winds, current levels, etc.) inorder to estimate loads on coastal defence structures, port works and offshoreinfrastructures. Expert in the physical coastal and marine environment, able tocharacterise and interpret different weather and marine event scenarios.Design, conduction and management of engineering projects for coastlinemanagement and protection, able to produce conceptual designs for industrialand tourist ports: from sizing breakwaters to the design of quays and wharfsfor commercial and leisure vessels. Design of off-shore structures used forenergy production and extractive purposes.

Cooperationin design studies for maritime works. Furthermore, with reference to civil works,drafting of Operational Safety Plans (POS).
