Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences

Admission tothe 2nd cycle degree programme is subject to the possession, firstlyof the curricular requirements and secondly to the assessment of the students'personal competencies and skills. Candidates who do not possess the describedcurricular requirements will not be admitted to the 2nd cycle degreeprogramme. Those in possession of the described curricular requirements will berequired to sit an entrance exam to assess their personal competencies andskills. Candidates passing the entrance exam will be admitted to the 2ndcycle degree programme. The curricular requirements and methods of assessingpersonal competencies and skills are indicated below.

CURRICULARREQUIREMENTS

Thecurricular requirements are met by 1st cycle graduates in Italy fromany Degree Programme in class 9 "Computer Engineering" ex D.M.509/1999 or class L-8 “Computer Engineering” ex D.M. 270/2004 which includesthe words “Engineering” and "electronic” in the name and 3-year bachelor'sgraduates in class 9 "Computer Engineering" ex D.M. 509/1999 or classL-8 “Computer Engineering” ex D.M. 270/2004 provided their final degree scoreis at least 105/110 (the degree score is reduced to 95/110 for graduates fromA.Y. 2011-2012 or AYs prior to 2011/2012).

The academiccareers of candidates who do not fall into one of the above categories, andstudents with degrees obtained abroad, will be assessed by the Degree ProgrammeBoard.

ASSESSMENTOF PERSONAL COMPETENCES AND SKILLS

Personalcompetencies and skills are deemed acceptable for candidates with at least 9ECTS in each of the subject areas ING-INF/01, ING-INF/02, ING-INF/03(requirement reduced from 9 to 6 ECTS for graduates in AY 2011–2012 or AY priorto 2011–2012), at least 36 ECTS overall in the three subject areas listedbelow, with at least 9 ECTS in each group:

- Group 1:MAT/02 Algebra, MAT/03 Geometry, MAT/05 Mathematical analysis, MAT/06Probability and Mathematical Statistics, MAT/07 Mathematical Physics, MAT/08Numerical Analysis, MAT/09 Operative Research;

- Group 2:CHIM/07 Chemical Foundations of Technologies, FIS/01 Experimental Physics,FIS/03 Matter Physics;

- Group 3:ING-INF/05 Information Processing Systems, INF/01 Computing.

Graduatesfrom degree programme systems which did not apply a credit system shall becalculated according to an annual credit of 12 ECTS and a semi-annual credit of6 ECTS for their previous degree system.

For 1stcycle graduates (or, respectively, 2nd cycle) in Italy (ex DM509/1999 or D.M. 270/2004) who do not satisfy the ECTS-based criteria describedabove, their personal competencies and skills are deemed to be acceptable witha 1st (or 2nd) cycle degree score of at least 92/110; forgraduates with a final degree score of less than 92/110, admission to the 2ndcycle degree programme is subject to the specific assessment by the DegreeProgramme Board of the students' academic career (the above degree score isreduced to 85/110 for graduates from AY 2011-2012 or AYs prior to 2011/2012).

For singlecycle graduates in Italy who do not satisfy the ECTS-based criteria describedabove, their personal competencies and skills will be deemed to be acceptablewith a 1st (or 2nd) cycle degree score of at least92/110, or in the event of the score expressed in hundredths, at least 84/100;for graduates with a final grade of less than 92/110, or in the event of thescore expressed in hundredths, less than 84/100, admission to the 2ndcycle degree programme is subject to the specific assessment by the DegreeProgramme Board of the students' academic career (the above degree score isreduced to 85/110, or 77/100, for single cycle graduates from AY 2014-2015 orAYs prior to 2014-2015).

The criterialaid down in this paragraph apply also to students in possession of auniversity degree obtained abroad and deemed appropriate by the DegreeProgramme Board, for which the conversion of the degree score to the Italiansystem, the identification of the subject areas and the number of creditsobtained in each sector is possible. If conversion and/or identification arenot possible, the students' career will be assessed by the Degree ProgrammeBoard.

Personalcompetencies and skills include language skills. Knowledge of the Englishlanguage must be demonstrated to at least level B2 by students enrolling in theinternational curriculum. If certification to at least level B2 (issued by theUniversity Linguistic Centre or other equivalent institute) is not available,this requirement for students enrolling in the international curriculum of this2nd cycle degree programme will be assessed on the basis of theirprevious academic careers and if required an interview with a specificallyappointed evaluation board. Students are in any case not permitted to enrol inthe second year of the international programme without certification, issued bythe University Linguistic Centre or other equivalent bodies, of their Englishlanguage skills to at least B2.

A specialAdmissions session may be held for international students, with a Boardappointed to assess the candidates' personal competencies and skills; thissession will be compatible with the schedule established in the call forapplications for study grants (which indicatively expires in May).

Internationalstudents who pass the above-mentioned assessment are exempted from thefollowing assessment of their personal competencies and skills required forother students.

The DegreeProgramme Board may exempt candidates from the assessment of personalcompetencies and skills in the event of:

- withdrawalfrom studies

- loss ofstudent status

-Application to opt out of previous degree programme systems

- possessionof an academic qualification obtained from or learning activities carried outin foreign universities

– transferfrom another degree programme at the Alma Mater Studiorum – University ofBologna

- Transferfrom another university.

The assessment in this case isbased on the analysis of the candidate's previous academic career.

Programme profile

The learningactivities in this degree programme are coherent with the profile of thereferred professional figures identified previously. Graduates in ElectronicEngineering have in-depth knowledge of the specific subjects of this class,particularly concerning the advanced design of micro- and nano-electronicdevices, solid state sensors and biosensors, modelling and design of integrateddigital and analogical circuits, the reliability of components and the designof innovative components, systems and processes. Ample room is reserved forlearning modern assisted design, modelling and simulation methods in order tobe able to tackle the design and management of highly complex systems thatinteract with many aspects of personal and professional life. The 2ndcycle programme is completed by related elective subjects which aim to produceprofessional figures with a broad knowledge base. The computer equipment andlaboratories available for use at the university, and constantly being enhanced,allow for the study of fields of application. Graduates will possess thefollowing skills:

-Proficiency in the advanced design of even particularly complex and innovativecomponents, systems and processes, using modern calculation and design methods.

- In-depthknowledge of the typical systems in use in the sector;

- Ability todesign innovative components, systems and processes;

-Organisational and management skills even in complex industrial systems.

Theachievement of the professional learning is assured by a course curriculumwhich aims to produce graduates with a solid methodological background,integrated by specific practical skills deriving from targeted laboratoryexperimentation, who are able to design and management systems, processes andservices both in the specific field of Electronic Engineering and in othercontexts in which information technologies hold particular importance. For thispurpose, 2nd cycle students are guided in the process ofunderstanding the problems, reference models and methods of the design ofmodern electronic systems, as well as the relative standards and the mostadvanced technologies available for their concrete application. Methodologicalapproaches are adopted throughout the study programme. Particular emphasis isplaced on the organic focus on the fundamental principles, the use of examplesin the definition of technical and scientific approaches, the presentation ofenvironments and instruments which together support the design of specificsectoral systems and architectures with a system-oriented vision. The specificskills will be complemented by a solid background in physics and mathematics,in-depth knowledge of the specific areas of study laid down in the specified inthe university degree class regulations concerning Computer Engineering,including computer engineering, Telecommunications, biomedical and automationengineering, business culture and appropriate knowledge of technologicalpolicies and research in the European Union.

The aforementioned judgement capabilities willbe developed through direct, complementary and integrative electronicengineering learning activities, and through further activities such asinternships, laboratories, and the preparation of the final project.

Learning techniques include seminars and training sessions (in classroom orlab), project work, guided study and autonomous study. Oral exams, writtenexams and project work are deployed to verify the student's preparation.
