Programme profile

The 1st cycle degree in Mechanical Engineering specifically aims to produce professional figures with an understanding of the methodological and operational aspects of basic engineering sciences, particularly focusing on the specific aspects of mechanical engineering, without neglecting the general aspects of engineering for industry. In particular, Mechanical Engineers have distinctive skills compared to other graduates in the same class. Indeed, the learning profile of Mechanical Engineering graduates allows them to perform professional activities including the design, modelling, optimisation and engineering of medium-complex components, systems, plants and processes, assessing their reliability, quality and safety, as well as the operation and assistance of technical and commercial structures in companies in the industrial engineering, and specifically in the mechanical engineering fields.

Graduates in Mechanical Engineering acquire a solid grounding in the methodological and operational aspects of basic sciences and engineering sciences, privileging the specific aspects of mechanical engineering without neglecting more general areas of engineering for industry; they are guided through a process of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental methods and instruments for designing mechanical components, machinery, systems and processes and the management and maintenance of production, industrial and mechanical plants. Their training is completed and integrated with significant experience in the laboratory, elements of contemporary business culture and organisation and appropriate knowledge of a foreign language.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum produces graduates with a solid and flexible background based on the in-depth technical and scientific knowledge gained during the curriculum, which they can successfully put to use in the world of work or to continue studies to 2nd cycle degree level. Having passed the state examination, in compliance with the applicable regulations, mechanical engineering graduates may work in a freelance capacity (feasibility studies, design, technical arbitration, technical expert for parties and on behalf of the courts, etc.).

Internship

Third-year students may participate in a curricular internship of 150-200 hours (6 credits) in firms that have agreements with the University of Bologna, either in Italy or abroad, or in facilities of the Degree itself. Students may also choose to carry out part of their final project through an internship. The organisation may be chosen directly by students or proposed by professors or by the Internship Office. The internship represents an important opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience of the world of work. Students who work already may request that this experience be recognised as a substitute to a work placement, as long as the experience is in line with the degree learning outcomes.

Rules for the recognition of the working activity in lieu of the internship period in the Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

For the Degree in Mechanical Engineering the working activity shall be in compliance with the following specifications, approved by the Board on July 4 2012.

The working activity must comply the following conditions:

  • working activity has been carried out within 2 years maximum before the date of submission of the request;
  • typical tasks comparable to Mechanical Engineer roles are acceptable. Tasks proper of laborer or workman or similar will not be considered;
  • participation in training courses is not deemed satisfactory to the educational purposes of the internship.

The internship activity is examined after completion with a simple pass/fail criterion.

The Degree Programme provides seminars, conferences and supplementary courses held by internal professors, foreign professors and qualified professional figures.

International mobility

Bologna University offers its students a series of study and training programmes abroad, both in Europe and worldwide. The University of Bologna is part of international networks, in particular it signs many Bilateral Agreements within the Erasmus+ programme and agreements with country outside Europe (Overseas programme).
Participation in the networks is aimed at promoting the cooperation between universities, while the agreements contribute to enhance academic relations for students, professors and researchers exchange.

Students can choose to carry out part of their final project or internship abroad.

Functions:

The Tutor acts as an interface between the students and the Degree Programme to offer a tangible reference for the teaching activities, to collect information and comments, as well as to receive any claims or feedbacks about existing critical conditions and, in general, the students' requests regarding logistic and organizational aspects or other issues.
He/she has also the function of providing a personalized support to learning, with the objective of maintaining the contacts with students who may for various reasons (for example, job activities) encounter major difficulties at tests/exams and of setting up a clear programming for their studies and career. The Tutor participates into the orientation activities, provides support to the Degree Programme Coordinator in the management of students' practices, and collaborates in the activities for the surveying of students' opinion about the teaching activities.
