Learning outcomes

Analysis and design of simple diagnostic systems. The electrical safety of biomedical equipment.

Course contents

Part I

Development of the Biomedical Instrumentation and his current classification. The architecture and the functional description of the systems for biomedical measures. Their static and dynamic performance and key techniques to improve their behavior. 


Part II

The three parts of the elementary chain of measurement: the sensors, amplifiers and display systems for biomedical use.


Part III

Analysis and design of systems for the measurement and monitoring of blood pressure. Analysis and design of an electrocardiograph: the main specifications, block diagram, specific electronic circuits, the automatic processing of the electrocardiogram.


Part iV

The electrical safety of medical devices. The physiological effects of electricity in humans. The danger of macroshock and the related security systems. The danger of microshock and the related security systems.

Teaching methods

The course includes classroom lessons in which the different topics are illustrated. Developed exercises and specific issues aimed at promoting understanding of the presented concepts are also included. It' also will also be a laboratory practice that allows the student to become familiar with the application of the course content.

Assessment methods

The assessment takes place, first, through a written test "in itinere" and, later, through an oral test. The written exam is a test of self-assessment and do not preclude participation in the final oral examination. The latter aims to test the student ability to expose the course subjects organically, concisely and with propriety of language. 

Teaching tools

Blackboard and PowerPoint slides during classroom lessons. Educational software, usually in Matlab, for laboratory exercises.
